What Is Teeth Cleaning & Polishing

The foundation of a healthy, confident smile

Professional teeth cleaning — also known as scaling and polishing — goes far beyond what your toothbrush can achieve. Our dental hygienists carefully remove built-up plaque, hardened tartar (calculus), and surface stains from all tooth surfaces, including areas that are difficult to reach at home.

Regular cleaning not only keeps your smile looking its best but also plays a vital role in preventing gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. At Dentale Cura, we recommend a professional clean every 6 months as part of your routine oral care.

The Right Clean for Every Smile

Scaling

Using hand scalers or an ultrasonic device, hardened tartar deposits are carefully removed from above and below the gum line — deposits that brushing simply cannot dislodge at home.

Polishing

A gentle rotating cup with a mildly abrasive polish paste buffs away surface stains from tea, coffee, wine, and tobacco — leaving teeth smooth, clean, and noticeably shinier.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

High-frequency vibrations break down stubborn calculus and plaque efficiently and comfortably — ideal for patients with heavy buildup or sensitivity to hand instruments.

Air Polishing

A jet of pressurised air, water, and fine powder removes biofilm and light stains in seconds — particularly effective around braces, implants, and hard-to-reach areas.

Deep Cleaning (Root Planing)

For patients with early-stage gum disease, deep cleaning involves scaling below the gum line and smoothing root surfaces to help gums reattach and prevent further bone loss.

Children's Hygiene Clean

A gentle, fun, and educational cleaning experience for young patients — removing plaque, polishing teeth, and teaching proper brushing habits for lifelong oral health.

Our Process

What Happens During Your Cleaning Visit

1
Oral Health Assessment

We start with a thorough check of your teeth and gums — identifying areas of concern, tartar buildup, or early signs of gum disease before treatment begins.

2
Scaling & Tartar Removal

Plaque and calculus are carefully removed from all tooth surfaces and below the gum line using hand scalers or an ultrasonic instrument.

3
Polishing & Stain Removal

Teeth are polished with a prophy paste to smooth surfaces, remove staining, and leave your smile visibly brighter and feeling fresh.

4
Fluoride & Oral Care Advice

We finish with a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel, and provide personalised brushing and flossing tips to maintain your results at home.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is teeth cleaning painful?
Professional cleaning is generally comfortable and painless. Some patients with sensitive gums may feel mild pressure during scaling, but our hygienists use a gentle technique throughout. We can apply a topical numbing gel if needed.
How often should I get my teeth professionally cleaned?
We recommend a professional clean every 6 months for most patients. Those with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or certain medical conditions may benefit from more frequent visits — your dentist will advise what's right for you.
Will cleaning make my teeth whiter?
Cleaning and polishing removes surface stains from tea, coffee, wine, and tobacco — restoring your teeth's natural colour and lustre. For deeper whitening beyond your natural shade, we can discuss professional teeth whitening treatment separately.
Can cleaning damage my enamel?
No. Professional scaling and polishing, when performed correctly by a trained dental professional, does not damage tooth enamel. The instruments and polish pastes used are carefully selected to be safe and non-abrasive on healthy enamel.
What should I do after my cleaning appointment?
You can eat and drink normally after your appointment. If fluoride was applied, wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking. Avoid staining foods and drinks for 24 hours to make the most of your polish, and continue brushing and flossing as advised.
